The Philips Norelco 1050CC Arcitec razor is fantastic. This is the first time I ever enjoyed shaving. Important Background Information before you read the rest of this review: I have used Norelco Electric razors for the past 20 years. I can not & will not use a blade razor as they cut and irritate my skin and I can’t be half asleep using them! I’ve always used Norelco Electric razors because they’ve been fairly comfortable on my skin.

Please note that I shave myself the following way as I refuse to shave dry: Over the sink, I first splash lukewarm to warm water on my face then splash Williams Lectric (preElectric) Shave on my face then splash water once again on my face and then put my electric razor head under the water faucet for a second or two and then shave. That whole process takes just a few seconds & serves to lubricate my skin. I mention this because if you don’t care for the way I shave, you might not get the same results shaving dry.

Specifically, I can not shave dry as it irritates my skin no matter what BS any Electric Razor Company including Norelco says and I get lousy dry shaves! Norelco says you are suppose to shave dry with this razor. I don’t and get great results and that’s all I care about. I’ve used this razor for about 10 months and I haven’t had any problems, whatsoever. If somehow shaving this way eventually wears this razor down faster then it would shaving dry, big deal, I’ll just get another one as I don’t mind paying for comfort!

ANYWAY TO GET TO THE REVIEW YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR: After I fully charged the Philips Norelco 1050CC Arcitec Razor the first time, I was initially very skeptical & puzzled as I did not see any controls to adjust the razor for sensitive or normal skin. The fact is there aren’t any which seems nuts. However, when I shaved I was in ecstasy as it was the fastest and most comfortable shave I’ve ever had. It felt like I was using a paint brush to go up & down- it was that smooth. I don’t have the foggiest idea how or why it was this comfortably smooth & fast. The shave was pretty close too- not 100% perfect but as good as I’ve ever gotten with an electric razor including under my chin and on my neckline.

I’m not going to lie to you though, I’ve always had problems shaving under my chin and on my neckline, and while I can shave more hairs off this area then ever before with the Norelco Arcitec 1050cc and its non-irritating, there are still hairs I can’t get off. I don’t know if there is an electric razor in existence that can shave all the hair off this area without irritating your skin! So right now I’m saying if you want the fastest and most comfortable shave you ever had with decent results, get this razor or a razor in the Norelco Arcitec series.

Apparently from what I can gather, all the razors in this series are basically the same with different non-shaving features (i.e., color scheme, extra leds, razor cleaner, etc). This razor comes with an automatic cleaning system which is incredibly easy, works great and I use daily. You just put in the specific Norelco solution which will last 2-3 weeks & easily rest your Razor on the Jet Cleaner, push on the button & your razor is cleaned each day. It’s almost fun to watch. I salute you, Norelco.

Could the Nikon D80 be the holy grail of the entry level digital SLR universe? What I mean by that, is the D80 a product that could finally bridge the gap from point and shoot cameras to the pro SLR level without breaking the bank, and needing a degree in rocket science to take great pictures. From my past experience, I’d have to say that’s not very likely.

Let’s take a look at auto focus first. Having 11 auto focus points is a good thing, but not necessarily perfect. While it’s true, that most camera auto focus schemes will fail under both low light conditions, and images with very little contrast, not all fail as badly. The Nikon D80 seems to struggle with it’s focusing approach more significantly than other cameras. If your a manual focuser by habit, then no big deal. Otherwise, one strike against the D80.

Suggesting that a $800 digital SLR camera produces soft images, is a somewhat relative statement, and should be taken in context. If your spending that kind of money on a digital camera, I would have fairly high expectations in terms of image quality. Sure, thanks to imaging software advances I can sharpen an image on my computer. But, not without introducing some distortion, and not to mention extra time effort on my part.

File this next nit pick under blatant cash grab. Nikon charges an additional $99 to buy the Capture NX software. A nice package to have, especially for fans of the wide angle lens. While there is other software out there that provides the same functionality, Nikon could have spoiled their new customers a little by bundling this one with the D80 SLR.

Minor details to some, but to others possible deal breakers. It’s really for you to decide. How you take pictures and where you want to take your art are the deciding factors. Here’s a few more morsels to gnaw on:

- ISO can only be changed thru the menu (too slow)

- dust removing system conspicuously absent (available in other cheaper SLRs)

- D80 seals are not exactly industrial strength quality

- new owners must be wary of dead pixel issues

- use of SD memory cards negates consumers existing CF card collection

- small grip for big hands

The Sony Alpha DSLR-A300 Digital SLR Camera features a 10.2 mega pixel CCD sensor, Live View, a sports built-in sensor shift anti-shake facility which works with practically any lens and a vertically-tilting monitor. The integrated kit comes with Sony’s DT 18-70 mm lens.

The sensor that provides the Live View facilities is the secondary sensor that comes built into the viewfinder. The A300 offers a versatile, real-time Live View LCD that eases the transition from point-and-shoot to digital SLR. This camera features an edge over it’s rival competitors in that it’s flexible Live View works in real time. With an MSRP of $700, the A300 is not particularly cheap, but what makes this camera so attractive is it’s tilt-screen trickery. This option is ideal for individuals who want to capture unique images.

The A300 comes with a 2.7 inch Live View screen which offers high-quality real time viewing, so you can manipulate images using the LCD screen just as you would with a point and shoot camera. A simple mechanical switch allows you to toggle back and forth between features. The Live View mode does not slow down the camera’s mechanics because the Alpha DSLR-A300’s Live View uses a separate mirror to transmit images. The traditional viewfinder also works just fine, as the eyecup and diopter comfortably fits most individuals.

The Live View mode allows you to compose shots of subjects at ground level easily, since you don’t have to crouch down onto the ground to look through the viewfinder. The LCD’s quality is outstanding and the Live View is truly an innovative feature of this camera that has many advanced functions and features. The A300 weighs 16.3 ounces. Not quite so light, the camera still gives a solid and balanced feel.

The camera is very intuitive to use, offering a 3-frames per second burst mode for fast-moving action. If you use the Live View that mode steps down to 2 frames per second. Manual setting are easy to manage, as the aperture and shutter priority modes are easy to switch. The A300’s Exposure Shift setting lets you set what you perceive as proper exposure and then allows you to make equivalent exposures using different shutter speeds and apertures. The white-balance settings are easy to adjust and fully customizable via the interactive menu.

What makes the Sony Alpha DSLR-A300 Digital SLR Camera so appealing by far is it’s smooth Live View handling. Not only that, but this camera is very fun to use and uncomplicated.

Understanding digital camera prices makes finding the best camera value much easier. Uncovering digital cameras best buys is easier if we know what’s available within various price ranges. With that in mind let’s explore camera prices in more detail.

Digital Cameras Priced Under $100

Super cheap digital cameras priced less than $50 are available from several companies. Resolutions are usually 1.3 megapixels or less, so they’re only suitable for small snapshots. But these cameras are great fun at very low cost – some under $20!

For $50 to $100 companies like Concord, Kodak and Oregon Scientific offer terrific discount digital cameras in the 2 to 4 MP range. They have limited features, but many include optical zoom, video capture and other neat stuff.

Cameras Priced From $100 to $200

Most cameras in this price range include 3 to 5 megapixel resolution – some even higher. Entry level models from respected camera makers including Canon, Fujifilm, Konica Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, Sony and others are included in this price range.

Most feature optical zooms, multiple scene and exposure modes, and other handy functions. These are usually compact digital cameras, with some small enough to slip in a pocket. For those shopping digital cameras this group deserves a close look.

$200 to $500 Digital Cameras

Far-and-away the broadest and most popular selections of cameras fall into this price range. Virtually all manufacturers offer many models with a dizzying array of features and functions. Sensor resolutions range from 3.0 to 8.0 megapixels or more.

This group includes compact and ultra-compact digital cameras. Ultra-compact models can be as small as a credit card and less than an inch thick with high resolution sensors and advanced features.

Basic Prosumer (serious enthusiast) cameras are in this price category. Advanced controls including manual settings, multiple AF zones, and sophisticated scene modes are common features of these cameras.

$500 to $1,000 Price Range

Most SLR-style Prosumer and a growing number of digital SLR cameras are in this price grouping. Serious photographers looking for creative control and high quality images are sure to find the perfect camera in this group.

All cameras in this price range feature a vast array of functions including full manual control, aperture or shutter priority, in-camera editing and more. High resolution sensors capable of 6 to 12 megapixels and precision lens optics are standard, many with high-powered zooms.

Professional Cameras Priced Over $1,000

Prices in this group can exceed $15,000, although most are under $5,000. Most are digital SLR’s and offer nearly limitless photo manipulation for the professional photographer. Here’s where you’ll find the most technologically advanced image sensors, processors and optics.

Unless you earn your living with a camera, SLR and Prosumer models priced under $1,000 will most likely provide all you could want or need in a digital camera. Most of the refinements in images taken by these high priced professional cameras aren’t noticeable even to experienced amateur photographers.

I came to the a700 from the Sony a100. I never did shoot with the Minolta 5D or 7D. Prior to my a100 purchase, I had owned several Sony and Minolta digital p&s cameras, so moving to the a100 made sense to me. Given that all my film SLR cameras were fully manual, I started my journey into the DSLR world without being tied to any current lens system.

I’ve been shooting with the a700 for about 2 years now. Somewhere between 30,000 and 40,000 shutter actuation’s later, it’s still going strong. I live in the Midwest of the United States and this camera has gotten use in four real seasons. It has been used in the 100 degree heat of our summers and in the negative temps of our worse winter weather. It’s a semi-pro body with all the durability you’d expect in this class. The body feels very solid in your hands and well constructed.

Picking up the a700 for the first time, you’ll immediately notice the 3″ 640×480 display that dominates the back. It’s the same Sony made display you’ll see on Nikon’s D300. This screen makes reviewing images and checking focus a breeze. It is usable in direct sunlight, however it does get somewhat washed out like all LCD displays.

Grip the camera in your hand and you’ll find two scroll wheels and numerous dedicated buttons at your finger tips. Dedicated buttons for Drive settings, ISO, WB, EV compensation, Metering, AEL and Instant MF are all within a thumbs reach. Don’t like menu diving to change common settings? Hit the Fn button button on the back to change many settings without ever leaving the main display. Want to alter your JPEG settings? Hit the “C” button on the back of the camera for instant fine tuning of JPEG processing.

On the grip of the camera you’ll find the memory card slot door. Slide this back and you’re presented with one MS PRO DUO card slot and one CF card slot. You can have a memory card in each slot all of the time. Unfortunately, you have to switch between cards manually from the menu system. It would have been preferrable if the camera automatically switched between cards when one filled up. It is nice to be able to have a backup card in the camera though.

Menus can be navigated either using the dual scroll wheels or the dedicated joystick on the back of the camera. Depressing the joystick or the shutter button will confirm a setting change. Pressing the shutter button while in any menu will cause the camera to a ready to shoot state.

Ergonomics were obviously of great importance to the designers of this camera. The majority of shooting related settings can be changed without taking your eye off of the viewfinder. The design is very logical and you’ll be able to quickly memorize the button layout. The display within the viewfinder will allow you to see what settings you’re changing. It’s s design intended for speedy and easy settings changes, so you can get busy taking photos rather than hunting through an endless assortment of redundant menus.

Since were talking about speed, it should be noted that this is a very speedy and responsive camera. If you’re coming from an a100, prepare to be blown away. It’s not just a matter of 5fps vs. 3fps or the much faster AF module, it’s just a far more responsive camera overall. It is immediately noticeable when changing settings or reviewing photos even. There is no lag when doing anything. The camera will never slow you down.

One of the single biggest improvements the a700 carries over its predecessors is AF speed and accuracy. It’s finally equal or better than the competition in this class. Whereas the a100 had difficulty tracking fast moving objects, the a700 keeps up with ease. I often resorted to manual focus when shooting hummingbirds with my a100. The AF of the a700 is good enough that I don’t bother with MF for quick moving subjects like hummingbirds anymore. You get the typical AF settings that are offered with bodies in this class, but I wouldn’t have minded if Sony had tossed in a bit more control. My body did intitially suffer from back focus issues when used with wide angle lenses. Sony fixed this under warranty and it has been fine since. Back focus issues are the single biggest complaint I have heard about a700 bodies, so it’s something to be weary of. Sony service can take care of it, but it would have been better if the problem never existed. Sony is far from the only manfucaturer to prodeuce a camera with BF or FF issues.

I think that takes us to image quality! The a700 will not dissapoint. Images are vibrant and sharp. Minolta colors are still there a bit, but there is also a bit of Sony colors there as well. Metering is consistent and startingly accurate at times. I don’t find myself ever second guessing this cameras metering system. Image noise is well controlled up to ISO 1600. Image quality is virtually identical to Nikons pricier and highly regarded D300. This is not a huge surprise considering they share the same Sony made 12MP image sensor. Using Sony’s Dynamic Range Optimization abilities, you can create some amazing images that would be very hard to impossible to duplicate in a RAW developer. I have tried and failed numerous times to duplicate what DRO does. Dynamic range is good for this class of camera. APS-C sized sensors still leave something to be desired when it comes to dynamic range, but that’s life(for now).

Pair this body with a good lens and I am sure you’ll be extremely pleased with the results. It’s nice that every lens you attach to this body will be stabilized.

Battery life has been very good. The original battery is still going strong after lots of use. You can use 3rd party batteries in this body.

If you buy one, make sure to upgrade the firmware to v1.04 asap. This firmware revsion improved JPEG image quality and added new features to the camera.

All in all I have been very pleased with his camera and would definitely buy one again.

Customer Reviews

Felt Like Second Nature – Anna Nguyen –
I purchased this camera as an upgrade to my sony A100, because I was building my photography business, and WOW was I impressed. I hit limits with the A100 and was looking for a great upgrade. I spent days, DAYS looking around, reading, researching cameras in the sony lineup and this one hit everything on the mark (I had a collection of old minolta lens and sony lens already). It’s definitely something I can grow with for the next two years.

Pros:
+ being a sony user – it felt so intuitive, I knew what I was doing after 5 minutes of use
+ ISO handling is awesome
+ the 16-105 Sony lens is amazing for the price
+ its size is impressive and the body is built wonderfully with the magnesium alloy body
+ comes with a wireless remote
+ the 3″ LCD screen spoiled me rotten
+ the AF/MF back button – I can quickly go between the two – it’s simple awesome

Cons:
+ the joystick is annoying for quick navigation through photos but you can scroll thru it all (also its the “enter” button pretty annoying there too)
+ weight – its pretty heavy around your neck, you might want to get the hand grip
+ the eye start focus was annoying now its really helpful once you get use to it. Good dslr packed with features for semi pros. – Daniel Cardoso – San Diego,CA
I bought this cam from J&R through amazon and it came on time and intact. This camera is just what you would expect from a Sony product the best, feels like a mini tank but the lens kit is it not all that, still does the job though for simple shots. I had been thinking about getting a Nikon or Canon, but i thought that their getting old and since this is my first dslr i would go with the NEW! sony has about a 14 percent share in the dslr market now and you bet their gonna grow fast. Sony is always very innovative, making their mark on any platform they get into. on top of that its just an overall cheaper system to be married to at the moment.

Great camera – Ron Moore – La Verne, CA USA
My present camera is an A100 Sony.I waited quite a while before I decided on this camera as an upgrade. I reviewed several Sony models on CNET Reviews and this cameras filled my needs and was extremely well priced. Newer models did not offer anything I needed to do the job for me. I am a semi advanced armature photographer.

Have a satellite system and now want a flat panel TV?

So you have gone out and purchased a Dish Network or Direct TV satellite system. When you got home, you realized that although you have a high definition receiver, your TV isn’t compatible. You have eyed those flat panel TVs in the store but don’t know which one to buy?

Two of the greatest changes to the world of televisions are the plasma TV and the LCD TV. Both offer slim and sleek designs and enable unique placement, such as above a fireplace or mounting on a wall. Gone are the days of the bulky CRT (cathode ray tube) televisions or rear projection; long live the flat panel!

So how does a plasma television work?

First introduced in 1964, improvements in processing and manufacturing have made the plasma television one of the best. Differing from other television technology, such as LCD and CRT, the image is created by combining all three colors within each pixel. The signal is sent by a charge through the electrodes sandwiched between two glass panels. This changes the state of the plasma gas inside and makes the red, green and blue phosphors glow, creating light on the picture screen.

You can buy plasma televisions in either Extended Definition (ED) or High Definition (HD) resolutions. ED panels can input full HD content 1080i (interlaced) but output 500p (progressive) resolution. If you are planning to use the plasma with primarily high definition and/or with a computer, consider the HD model. If you are using it mostly with DVD, regular satellite, or cable, you will find the ED model looks great. A good ED model will outperform a poor HD plasma television, so choose a good manufacturer.

So how does a LCD television work?

The LCD television creates a picture by using a system called Twisted Nematic (TM). It is a naturally twisted crystalline structure that reacts to electric currents in predictable manners. These electric currents cause the crystal to untwist to different degrees based on the voltage given. These TM crystals are stuck between panes of polarized glass and the untwisting allows varied amounts of light to pass through.

If you are looking for a flat panel television, here are the guidelines. Below 32 inches, buy a LCD, above buy a plasma. LCD panels are available in larger sizes but the cost and quality of image will make a plasma more attractive.

Plasma televisions are better able to display fast movement without any trailing. As well, plasma televisions have a much greater contrast ratio than LCD televisions. Panasonic lists their plasma televisions at 3000:1, while the best LCD tends to be only 1000:1 contrast ratio. The plasma television has a greater angle of view and better color saturation too.

One area where the LCD television has an advantage over plasma is in screen integrity. You need to be careful with potential burn-in on plasma, but not on the LCD TV.
